Decision Date Postponed
The current March 2026 update from Advanced UV for Life addresses the further progress of the RoHS exemption procedure for UV technologies and the timeline for regulatory decisions at EU level.
A decision by the European Commission on RoHS exemptions 4(a)-I and 4(f)-IV for mercury-containing UV lamp technologies is expected to occur later than widely anticipated. The focus is particularly on applications such as UV disinfection, curing, and other industrial UV processes.
A look at the extension and amendment applications also shows that within the industry, different lines of argument exist regarding the substitutability of UV lamps and the role of system solutions.
Summary of the March 2026 Update
- The deadline of February 24, 2027, loses significance for mercury-containing UV technologies in categories 4(a)-I and 4(f)-IV
- The decision-making process is delayed. Consultation and scientific evaluation have not yet begun.
- Regulatory planning certainty remains in the short term – strategic uncertainty increases in the long term.
- A preliminary look at the application documents reveals different regulatory strategies within the industry.
- Strategic decisions in the UV market will not be shaped by regulatory deadlines for now, but by technology and market development.
