EuPIA publishes guidance on Swiss Ink Ordinance and declaration of conformity (DoC)
Since 2017 the “Swiss Ordinance” (Ordinance on Materials and Articles in contact with Food SR 817.023.21) sets standards for printed food packaging materials in Switzerland. With the revision from December 2023 the Swiss authorities implemented some major changes amongst which the requirement for a declaration of conformity (DoC). In line with the provisions of the EU food contact legislation and the relevant guidance documents of the Council of Europe, each actor in the value chain has to provide the information needed by the next actor for compliance work.
5th Version of EuPIA GMP published
Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) is a central pillar for ensuring the safety of food contact materials. Since 2009 the EuPIA GMP stets standards and assists in controlling food safety hazards in the design and manufacture of inks, varnishes and coatings designed to be printed onto FCM inks and formulated for use on either the non-food contact or the food contact surfaces of food packaging and articles intended to come into contact with food.
Calculation of CO2-Footprints and effect of coatings
The presented approach enables the calculation of CO2-footprints of prints. Epistemic errors are discussed. The approach presented proves that coatings can contribute significantly to the CO2-footprint of coated substances - the areal coverage of coatings (e.g. ink) has to be considered when CO2-footprints of prints are reported. In connection with market figures, the approach also proves that the most important variables to be taken into account, in addition to the area coverage, are the basis weight of the substrate and the conversion factors.
