From its inception and early development, UV curing in the packaging industry
has grown rapidly in the last decade. The early days of this technology were
restricted by the lack of quality equipment, products and knowledge which could
only be gained by research and development over many years. UV curing was
once a technology used mainly by the larger specialist packaging printers. Not
any longer.

UV curing in the packaging industry has now become a much sought after
process for a wide range of printing and coating applications. Much of this is
due to the early pioneers who for many years spent considerable time and effort
developing UV curing in their quest for an alternative to conventional processes.
This allowed the production of new print products on a wide range of materials
and surfaces not previously possible with conventional inks, together with high
gloss finishes and, most importantly, instantly dry from the press.

So, where does UV curing fit in the world of creative packaging? Perhaps the
best place to start looking is the way in which demand has forced suppliers to
re-assess their production capabilities and we can start by analysing where the
demand has come from.
