Photocurable resins are commonly used as protective coatings to improve the surface
properties of a large variety of materials, and in particular in floor covering applications 1•
The main advantages of this solvent-free technology is the rapidity of the curing '
which allows one to operate the production line at relatively high speed (up to 20 m miir 1).
Besides their high reactivity, UV-curable formulations must fulfil a number of specifications,
particularly regarding the mechanical and optical properties of the cured product. Floor
coatings must exhibit a good resistance to abrasion, scratching and staining, while at the
same time they should not be too glossy nor too slippery 4'5. The objective of the present
work was to develop a UV-curable formulation based on acrylate chemistry which would
meet satisfactorily the main requirements imposed to coatings to be used in floor covering
applications. Special attention has been given to the effect of chemical and physical
parameters on both the polymerisation kinetics and the final properties of the UV-cured
coating.
